Overall, this book is quite an excellent example of imaginary natural history. Central to all is the elephant trainer and his tragic demise, his son the clown, his granddaughter the runaway and his great-granddaughter, the academic. His trek across the disintegrating South brings him into intimate and sometimes lethal converse with slaves and marauders, bounty hunters and witches, both helpful and malign. It is an effort well worth making in order to acquire an understanding of the spiritual world and how it interpenetrates the physical.
